Mary & Jeffrey Newsome Legacy Educators & Lifelong Servants of the Community
Mary and Jeffrey Newsome, a remarkable mother and son duo, dedicated a combined 70 years to the Houston Independent School District, education, leadership, and community service. Their impact continues to be felt through the many students, educators, and families they inspired
Mary Newsome began her career at Ed White Elementary before moving to River Oaks Elementary, where her passion for teaching and commitment to student success quickly became evident. Her leadership path led her to serve as an instructional supervisor in the Houston Independent School District North District, where she mentored countless educators and supported academic excellence across schools. Later, she brought her skills and compassion to Sam Houston High School as an assistant principal of the ninth-grade academy. Even after retiring, Mary answered the call to serve again, returning to support Houston Independent School District campuses in the Waltrip and Scarborough feeder pattern with grace, experience, and an unwavering belief in the power of education.
Following in his mother’s footsteps of service, Jeffrey Newsome brought his unique impact as an educator and minister. As a physical education teacher, his career started at the Houston Independent School District, Nathaniel Q. Henderson. He inspired his students to grow in strength, confidence, and character. As a dedicated football coach, he saw athletics as a powerful tool to mentor youth and teach life lessons about discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. His calling as a minister outside the school walls allowed him to serve the community with faith, compassion, and a deep sense of purpose. His prayer ministry allowed him to pray for people all over the country.
Together, Mary and Jeffrey embodied the spirit of servant leadership. Their combined contributions to education and community continue to inspire future generations of educators, leaders, and changemakers.
