Mary & Jeffrey Newsome Lifelong

Educators AND Servants of the Community

Mary and Jeffrey Newsome, a remarkable mother-son duo, dedicated a combined 70 years to the Houston Independent School District, education, leadership, and community service. The many students, educators, and families they inspired continue to carry their impact forward.

Mary Newsome, a proud graduate of Texas Southern University, began her career at Ed White Elementary before moving to River Oaks Elementary, where her passion for teaching and commitment to student success quickly became evident. Her leadership path led her to serve as an instructional supervisor in the Houston Independent School District North District, where she mentored countless educators and supported academic excellence across schools. Later, she brought her skills and compassion to Sam Houston High School as an assistant principal of the ninth-grade academy and the professional academy. Even after retiring, Mary answered the call to serve again, returning to support Houston Independent School District campuses in the Waltrip and Scarborough feeder pattern with grace, experience, and an unwavering belief in the power of education.

Following in his mother’s footsteps of service, Jeffrey Newsome, a proud alumnus of Grambling State University, has made a unique impact as an educator and minister in education. As a physical education teacher, Jeffrey started his career at Nathaniel Q. Henderson’s in the Houston Independent School District. He inspired his students to grow in strength, confidence, and character. As a dedicated football coach at Kashmere High School and Wheatley High School and girls basketball coach at Wheatley High School, he saw athletics as a powerful tool to mentor youth and teach life lessons about discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. His calling as a minister outside the school walls allowed him to serve the community with faith, compassion, and a deep sense of purpose. His prayer ministry enabled him to teach the word of God to people through prayer across the country.

Mary and Jeffrey lived their lives with a love of learning, a heart for service, and a belief that education can change lives.
